Description

Autumn 2011
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France

Dawn above the highest European peaks in the French Alps. While the deeply cut Chamonix Valley is still covered in clouds, first sunlight reaches the summits of Aiguille Verte (4122 m), Grand Jorasses (4204 m) and Mont Blanc (4810 m) (from left).

This is one of those pictures which instantly captivates the eye with its natural beauty.

Technically - considering contrast, exposure, focus, etc. - the image is excellent. The lower brightness reflects the lighting conditions at twilight.
The composition is well balanced and although it disobeys most of the classical scenery principles, there are distinct layers which build its structure and do not let it fall into chaos. I would only suggest a little more of the sky to be included in it, to let the mountain "breathe" more lightly. This way the line of the snow will also fall down a bit and level with the 1/3 of the cadre.

The greatest deal of impact is doubtlessly created by the colors. The color scheme is almost completely within the blues but different hues outline the nearby objects and the peaks in the distance adding a subtle variety. The sky gradient is extremely clear and very soft despite its wide range.

The overall feeling is enchanting. Deep, saturated blue colors in combination with softly flowing clouds and water give the picture an almost unreal look, just as much as it has the crystal clear cold feeling of a high winter mountain.
